We didn't have anything pre-loaded into the Sat Nav, it was a US model Tomtom Start/Via that a relative had purchased recently in Chicago and kindly allowed us to bring along. The EZ guide was great for ensuring we didn't miss any sections of Route 66. We found the Sat Nav invaluable in certain areas - mainly in the large cities (locating our hotel in Oklahoma City springs to mind). We did the Route in May-June with the assistance of a Sat Nav and the EZ guide. Like you mentioned, we will use the EZ66 (have the 3rd edition now, the distances do help) – and the TomTom will be there to help follow along, guides us to hotels and just be there should the inevitable happen. Garmins do vary, so do the files and I believe Tyre has an option to write them straight to the Garmin to make things easier. The files I created are for a TomTom, but you can convert these into a Garmin format using a product called 'Tyre' (its free).Īlternatively you can use Tyre to create your own routes and save to the Garmin. Having dabbled with Garmin's, there is a full guided route been created - but the model of your Garmin will all depend if this is compatible.
We will be doing 66 the same month – I've decided to go with the EZ66 and a TomTom loaded with itinerary files that cover the whole route.
